Chapter 38

After my conversation with Jack we agreed I could pick up in the morning. I was a little unnerved by how calm he remained. I threw my shirt over Toff and drove thirty miles to another hotel, this one much less expensive. I parked in the rear so as to not attract attention and got a place to stay for one night. It was 1:00 AM by the time I got into the room, and I had a hard time waking Toff up. I hoped she hadn’t been belted too hard in the head. I got her inside the room with some difficulty, as she faded in and out of consciousness. I dressed her in a set of sweatpants and a t-shirt of mine. I wasn’t a big guy, but the shirt swam on her. Then I sat in the hotel chair, reloaded my handguns, and began to think my way through the night’s events.

Slim and Jude had to be inside or have someone inside of Jack Pittman’s operations somehow. No one had followed me—why would they?—and I certainly hadn’t advertised why I was there or what my association with Jack Pittman meant. I certainly hadn’t planned on involving Toff. I needed to know how far she’d gone with them. Was I just a mark—it had to be questioned—or was our little tryst just an accident? I would lay out some choices for her in the morning. I laid myself gingerly next to her on the bed, one hand on my .40. I turned slightly and could still smell the shampoo she wore. Much like Joyce’s, my guilty conscience said. I had some thinking to do. I traced her jawline with one finger. Her eye would remain punky for some time, poor kid. Her situation was all on me. I sighed and closed my eyes, waiting for sleep to blinker me out. I woke up twice to the cell phone buzzing but ignored it. Jack Pittman could wait.
